T-Bone made this quick sketch to illustrate Adam’s sleeping posture one year ago today. The rectangular form represents the crib he has recently outgrown, with the short vertical line on the right being the top, or head, of the mattress. The sausage-like protrusions from the crib’s perimeter show Adam’s arms being thrust through the bars and (presumbly) hanging down in the embrace of gravity.

This fall Adam graduated to his big boy bed, and the timing seemed right. That was a good thing, since T-Bone was bound and determined that he be ousted from the crib regardless, so that he’d have time to get used to the idea of it not being his any longer, so that crib-envy, at least, would not be a cause of sibling strife come January.

T-Bone and I have a small collection of Post-It notes we treasure to one degree or another — one was featured here not too long ago — and this one is of special pan-generational sentimental value, since it provides both a snapshot of the bizarre sleeping habits of my son, so recently a baby, and a reminder of what was happening on the morning of my father’s last day. Circle of life.
