  2. It certainly seems like you should be able to conjure up some of that stuff in a city of 2 million people. Egg sandwich? Onion rings? Raspberries? However, I am deeply gratified that some of my musings made your first draft list. Can’t wait!

  3. The best Thai food in town is walking distance from our house. Jeff lived on spring rolls and pineapple soda for weeks. We’d stop on the way home from chemo. We usually get spring rolls, pad thai, satay-or what Jeff calls rat-on-a-stick, garlic shrimp, and my new favorite: Hormok, which is salmon baked in red curry & coconut milk with slivered red and green peppers, onions, snowpeas, and whole basil leaves…..and how about Larb Gai which is spicy ground chicken w/ lemon grass, red onion, mint, scallion, roasted rice and hot chilies on cool lettuce and cucumber, mmmmmm. And the lady owner always bows, smiles, and gives us free curry puffs whenever we come in. Life is good.

  4. Wait a minute, gaoo: are you telling me that your email was not sent in response to this list? I posted this before your whole salmon-and-corn thing arrived.

    It’s not that none of these things are available here — for example, corn on the cob is sold on most street corners — but be sure that they are things we wish to encounter or plan to prepare while in the U.S.

    The Dark & Stormies are Magda’s contribution. Wait till we show you how to make homemade ginger beer that will take your scalp off.

    I think I found that Thai place last time I was there, and I’m pretty sure that I ordered that very salmon dish you describe. And we love Rat-on-a-Stick.

  5. It is true, I wrote to you about crab salad & mojitos et al hours before I saw your post. I thought your post was in response to MY list, haha. Well, at least we know what is important around here: food. Can’t wait to kick back with a couple of rockin Dark & Stormies and a plate of mussels with you all. How do they do corn on the cob in Bulgaria? Any interesting twist? Like in Mexico where it is drenched in lime juice and kickass chili powder. But they also put cucumber in fruit salad there. Go figure…

  9. I was wonderin’. I was trying to think of something clever involving flaming dumpsters, but could not. I say, invite all friends within 3000 miles to one giant BBQ. Maybe a weekend- with cookouts, beach days, takeout, and brunch. Then there will be time for everything we want to do in three short weeks.Woohoo. The cousins will all be bestest friends by the end, and then it will be over.

  11. Dude, I’ve been searching everywhere for Malacca gin, and the best information I have been able to find suggests that it is no longer made. Thus it is only available from purveyors who have not yet managed to clear out their old stock of it. But good luck with the hunt.

    I’ve never really recovered from the psychological damage I incurred upon finding that there is no Malacca gin in Malacca. It’s just so wrong.

  12. I was fairly sure that they’d stopped making it, but thought I might still see if I could hunt some down.

    If I had been with you in Malacca, I’m pretty sure we would have had no choice but to burn the entire place to the ground upon making that discovery.

  13. Also, I don’t mean to be all picky and shit, but I think you mean chile con queso. Chili is the meat and/or bean stew-like substance.
