From the files: Jane sent me a macro-coupling ring back in July. This lets you mate two lenses end-to-end to create a clumsy ad hoc extreme macro lens. These images were made in a hurry in my first (and, sadly, only) test of this new toy, using two old pre-digital prime lenses, one a 50 mm f/2.0, the other a 28 mm f/2.8. There must be some metric for calculating what the mutant-love-child focal length and f/ factor is when the two mate, but I don’t know it. All I do know is that the result was as much microscope as camera lens, that the depth of field was approximately as thin as onion skin, and that I would love to have more free time to play with this $4 toy. Focusing is so time-consuming I suppose I’ll have to wait til Alek is in college before I get to play with this rig any more. These pictures from last summer are a testament to how intensely rich and busy being a parent makes one’s life feel, and/or how lame I truly am.
