From the files: Jane sent me a macro-coupling ring back in July. This lets you mate two lenses end-to-end to create a clumsy ad hoc extreme macro lens. These images were made in a hurry in my first (and, sadly, only) test of this new toy, using two old pre-digital prime lenses, one a 50 mm f/2.0, the other a 28 mm f/2.8. There must be some metric for calculating what the mutant-love-child focal length and f/ factor is when the two mate, but I don’t know it. All I do know is that the result was as much microscope as camera lens, that the depth of field was approximately as thin as onion skin, and that I would love to have more free time to play with this $4 toy. Focusing is so time-consuming I suppose I’ll have to wait til Alek is in college before I get to play with this rig any more. These pictures from last summer are a testament to how intensely rich and busy being a parent makes one’s life feel, and/or how lame I truly am.
1: Yugoslav coin, Cyrillic alphabet 2: key-ring bight, eroded & corroded 3: tenacious flowerpot moss 4: tenacious flowerpot succulent 5: some poor leaf that blew in 6: pollen on flower stamen 7: key-ring knurling (for Simon) 8: Tweety pencil-topper 9: Coin again, Latin alphabet

Bravo on the coin symmetry.

I like the weird depth of field. Gives the photos a dreamlike quality.

I’ve been trying to find a cheap way to do macro photography without having to shell out $400 for a macro lens. Someone suggested rings like this, but not for putting 2 lenses together, as I only have 1 lens. Wonder if a macro ring would work? I love your shots here and would love to do some like it!
p.s. Being a parent rocks! :)
