“The 70’s were not kind to us”
My sister sent a bunch of scans of old family photos. Her commentary accompanying the email is reproduced in the title, although these photos actually span three decades.
In a separate email, she adds, “My question is, how do our children look so much better than we did?”
Easy. THE SEVENTIES ENDED.
Marrying up doesn’t hurt, either.

As someone born in 1970, I got to experience a childhood of avocado green and harvest gold and an adolescence that is, I believe, best represented by this thing and all the hate surrounding it.

JDS-
I love the photo of you lighting a cigarette. Your expression might rival the infamous Kevin Duddy.

In light of her husband’s recent request for embarrassing photos, I’ll mention: I always thought JUS suffered the least from the slings and arrows of outrageous fashion.
By the way, I’m the stone-cold fox with auburn hair, clad all in black, in the big center pic. (I’m also the Snerdetta Overbite in thick glasses, saying, “hyuck, hyuck, hyuck!” directly above. I like to think I, um, grew into my face.)
p.s. In the name of family, I am stealing all of these, and posting the composite on the blog. Smooch!

oh, i still love avocado green and harvest gold. i am a true child of the 70s.
also: i do not see one plaid cowboy-style shirt with fake plastic mother-of-pearl snaps up there. surely this is an oversight.

Good point about the plaid shirt, of which I had approximately 1 milion. Also, where are the t-shirts with iron-on images of Kristy McNichol, John Travolta, or Donnie Osmond?

1) You look a little old to be all like totally bershon in the cig/seersucker photo. We were worried about you….
2) I totally did have LOTS of plaid cowboy shirts with piping in all the wrong places and fakey buttons. ALso, slippery disco Saturday Night Fever shirts, with the haircut to match. Thankfully, none of those pictures survive. At least I hope they didn’t.
3) Elsa, you were a stone fox in that one. I have lots more of that genre if you want. And even if you don’t.

Oh! I’ve been away from my computer and just caught up on your blog. Thanks for the shoutout and thanks even more for sharing your little slice of the 70s. Keep on truckin’!

Found this page due to a link on the Flickr “Bershon” page. I saw that 4th Grade class and went “Hey! Is that MY class??” It’s amazing that those pictures are so standard that I could have instantly thought that.
The kid with the red-and-blue striped shirt looks exactly like my brother at around that age. I think he wore that same outfit to his school picture.
I also think the top left corner picture of the collage would be considered a cool look now. (Of course, not by kids that age – but older brothers would totally respect it.)
