Slovenia doesn’t suck

In case there was any doubt in your mind:

Yesterday we put our friend Ola on a plane out of Treviso. She was extremely understanding about our deep boringness and accepted the meager scraps of interesting Slovenianess we were able to present with appreciation and grace. We were especially lucky that on her last evening with us, our Canado-Slovene friend Andrej invited us to go along on a wine-tasting his work had organized. It involved driving straight up a hill which has probably been cultivated with grapes for the last three thousand years. One of those hilltops that must’ve been a sweet redoubt back in the Iron Age. We were sure we were lost as we drove up it. “We will admit we’re lost when the road begins descending”, Magda told me as I cursed. She was right, and instants later our boys were admiring the views and the baby Rebula grapes on the vertiginous vines. After descending into the vinska klet they managed to keep the howling to somewhere between a minimum and a maximum during the excellent tasting. But eventually we decided the din of our sons was impinging on the experience for the others and so we hied them the hell out of there. Not before making some purchases, though. Thankfully, we departed in time to catch the sunset over the Vipava Valley.

These photographs don’t begin to do justice to the dramatic beauty of the Stegovec winery’s situation, but they do begin to hint at our basic premise here: Slovenia doesn’t suck.

The picture at top is a northerly view from the winery’s parking area. Vines fill the left foreground. Below is the Vipava Valley’s western end, with sun setting over Nova Gorica.

As is usual with panoramae, bigger is better, so click through the images to see them in a size that does marginally more justice to the views which attest to this: Slovenia does not suck.

  1. The photos are grand, but I think I need to see for myself. Especially when I’m again able to start throwing back the wine. So when we have a spare couple thousand dollars, expect to find us at your doorstep.
