Venice Souvenir with real thing close.JPG

Once again the visiting relatives could not take any more Gorgonzola-buying excursions or another hour of staring at the four walls and/or “My Name Is Earl”. At the same time Magda grew weary of listening to me moan about the loud breast-feeding sounds which nightly interfere with my slumbers, so out we went. This time towards Venice. And as everyone knows, Venice is not Venice without gondolas. Preferably of shoddy Chinese manufacture.

While our experiments are so far limited in scope, this appears to be by far the most efficient way of extracting maximum value from your tourist Euro. We laughed like drains for an hour, and in Venice that’s good value for €3.

The day before we got on the train the new JPG magazine had arrived, with an article on Michael Hughes’s fantastic ‘Souvenir’ project. While browsing the Flickr photoset and reading the JPG article are good fun, they’re nothing compared to making your own. Go ye forth and do likewise.

  1. I wish I’d chanced upon your gondola and gondolier ths last time I was in Venice. His boat seems much cleaner and the gondolier seems to be a fine example of self-controlled verbal output. You can gather our experience was not like that at all. In addition to the doling out of €85.

  5. I am proud to say I have lived less than two hours’ drive from Venice for most of the past twenty years and have yet to visit.

  6. That first shot is most excellent! Love the way the real thing is but a shadow of the souvenir. Good use of the blurring mechanism on the lensbaby.
