Money shot #7: half a euro

Slovenian half-Euro

Upon returning to work this week I’ve found that the coffee machine has been modded in advance of the weekend currency changeover. Bills, before accepted in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 tolars, are now out; tolar coins will go in, but change emerges in the form of this new coin called the euro. Perhaps you’ve heard of it.

My coffee yesterday resulted in this shiny new .50 euro coin clattering into the change return. Though I’d seen previews of the Slovenian coins, this was the first time I’d held one in my hand, and it was also the first time I’d seen a coin prior to the beginning of the year stamped on it. Both experiences were oddly disorienting.

Welcome to the future. Welcome to the eurozone. Goodbye, tolar.

  1. I wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for ill advised, but that coin seems to contain implicit support for astrology. Even worse: it’s the closest the Slo-cents come to any kind of mention of science…
