Slap Savice

Slap Savice Pan

At 60 meters the Slap Savice (Savica waterfall) is not even in the top seven of Slovenia’s highest, but it’s still dramatic. This is a karstic waterfall, meaning the water that forms it percolates downward through porous limestone before spurting abruptly from the side of a cliff. It is one of the sources of the Sava River, a tributary of the Danube, and also the headwaters of Lake Bohinj, where we spent a quiet weekend trying to figure out what the weather would do — it was the kind of pre-fall weather that does the opposite of what you have dressed for. In cool, partly cloudy but sometimes hot and sunny with occasional showery weather we lugged Adam up to see this source of the Sava. He enjoyed the nature loudly.

The picture is a collage put together from six separate photos. I shrank them to make them easier to work with and put them together, or had them put together for me, using a program I recently found called Autostitch. The colors have not been been monkeyed with at all. As Magda remarked about the colors a bit further downstream, “if you took a picture it wouldn’t show them properly.” No, but you can try.

Though I shrank the pictures, the original collage is pretty massive (776 x 1367 pixels) and a good deal nicer to look at if you like detail (or want to see the seams) and have some bandwidth. You can see it here on Flickr. To see a watery photocollage put together with no outside help or concern for seams, go here.

  1. Very interesting color. Did you mess with it? Ha,ha, just kidding. The color in the waterfall reminded me of Agua Azul in Chiapas, Mexico. A touristy swimming hole with breathtakingly clear turquoise waters. I believe limestone had something to do with that coloration too. The stone base under the waterfalls was like so many drippy sand castles from precipitated limestone. One of the more beautiful places I have ever been, and hey, I’ve been to Blueberry Hill, Schoodic Point. See above.

PS. What’s with the alarming Xray?
